BOY bands come and go, but on the back of McFly's performance in Nottingham last Friday, the pop foursome have proved they really are here to stay.
It's little more than three-and-a-half years since McFly released their debut single, Five Colours In Her Hair, but it seems like they've been around forever.
Since then, Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter have racked up a phenomenal seven number one singles and two number one albums.
And I don't think I was the only one in a packed Nottingham Trent FM Arena who could see exactly why.
I took my 10-year-old son, Harry, to the Notts leg of their Radio:ACTIVE tour. It had all the ingredients for an ideal first pop concert for him - no bad language (I hoped), no rude stuff, all good clean family fun. And the boys didn't disappoint.
McFly brought a theatrical set with them - lots of explosions, fireworks, spectacular lighting, giant shiny fans and flapping cloth. Particularly impressive if you're 10 years old!
There's no doubt McFly have been well marketed but, ultimately, their longevity has to come down to two things - they can sing AND they can play instruments.
We were treated to big hits like Obviously, All About You, One For The Radio, The Last Song and Room On The Third Floor.
Then, to up the tempo, the boys whipped the mainly adolescent crowd into a frenzy as they launched into Transylvania, stepping aboard a piece of detachable stage which rose into the air and moved to the back of the arena above the audience's heads.
In their new position they treated the 'people at the back' to a handful of songs, then made it back to the main stage ready for an irresistible version of Michael Jackson's Black and White.
It's very easy for so-called critics to knock pop acts like McFly, but I suspect teeny poppers like these four will have the last laugh with their incredible success.
Seeing McFly live is a bit like an evening with old friends - very comfortable, easy listening and you know all the words.
I'm not too hip to admit I loved them.
